Chapter 1
“Ms. Wilson?” the attorney asked when Katie answered her cell.
“Yes, this is Katie Wilson? Who is this?”
“Ms. Wilson, I’m Roland Turnupseed, your grandmother, Helena Carlisle?”
“Yes. Why would you be calling me?”
“I’m calling you because you are the main benefactor in your grandmother’s will.”
“Me?” Katie said in disbelief.
“Yes, Helena always said you were her favorite grandchild.”
“Really?” Katie asked. Katie always being in a constant battle with her grandmother. She had no idea she her favorite grandchild.
“Yes. The reading is set for this Friday at 10:00 am.” Mr. Turnupseed told her. “Please, I ask, be prompt.”
“Yes, Mr. Turnupseed. I will make a note of that.” Katie said before hanging up and getting her cell out to put in her calendar. She had to do this as she would forget due to her hectic busy schedule of school and work. She wanted to be a chef one day. But school and work at the local diner were making it impossible to keep up with her studies. And if she didn’t work, she couldn’t keep her studies at the culinary school.
Later, after Katie was studying for her test at culinary school, Katie’s boyfriend, Albert, or Al, as Katie refereed to him, called asking her to dinner.
“I’d love to Al, but I’ve got a busy schedule studying tonight. Then I have to work all week at the diner. And my grandmother’s attorney called about a will reading this Friday.” Katie gave Al the bad news.
“Katie, it’s just dinner? I’m not asking for your hand in marriage?”
“Funny, Al.” Katie said blowing him a kiss through the phone. “But you’re sweet to ask me to dinner.”
“So, will you go? Please, pretty please?”
“Okay.” Katie relented against her better judgment. Somehow she knew she would regret going despite the fun they always seemed to have.
Chapter 2
Friday was here and Katie didn’t want to get up. But she knew she had to get ready for the will reading of her grandmother.
Reluctantly hopping out of bed, Katie jumped in the shower and lathered herself up with her cucumber melon body wash before shampooing her long tresses.
After the a quick shower, Katie put on her blue dress that she picked out the night before and put her hair up in a twisted chignon before heading to the kitchen to get a quick breakfast of coffee and donuts. Katie knew she should eat a healthier breakfast, but coffee and donuts were her sinful treats. She simply couldn’t pass up coffee and donuts every morning.
After eating her morning coffee and donuts, Katie quickly grabbed her briefcase and headed out the door to her 2-door sedan. Yes, it was a old gas hog, but her father, God bless his soul, had passed it on to her at this death. Katie couldn’t part with her father’s car.
Driving through town, Katie arrived at Roland Turnupseed’s office and headed inside, where his paralegal, Jena, showed Katie where to wait for the reading.
As she sat down in a chair in the waiting room, Katie took out her cell and went to Facebook where she checked her notifications and messages.
After waiting for 10 minutes, it was funny how Mr. Turnupseed instructed her to be prompt, yet she had to wait 10 minutes for her to see him, Mr. Roland came out to retrieve Katie for the reading.
When she got inside Mr. Turnupseed’s office, she was shocked to discover she was the only one there, “Where is everyone else?”
“You’re the only one needed to hear the reading.”
“But, my brother and older sister?”
“They weren’t mentioned, so they didn’t need to be here.”
Katie knew her brother, James, and sister, Elvira, had had a falling out with their grandmother, but she didn’t know it would result in them being left out of the will.
“Now, are you ready to hear the will?” Mr. Turnupseed asked, interrupting Katie’s thoughts.
“Yes.” Katie said as she sat across from Mr. Turnupseed.
Mr. Turnupseed picked up the remote to the DVD player and turned on the video that Katie’s grandmother had made for the reading.
After viewing the will, Katie was shocked that she had inherited the entire estate plus her 100 million grand. She was shocked with the catch: she had to run her grandmother’s restaurant for an entire year before she got a penny of the estate.
With school and work, Katie didn’t know how she could also run the restaurant too….
